My name is Britt Beda, and I am a forty-something mother of an amazing little girl named Bryn. Before she was a glimmer in our eyes, I worked in marketing, public relations and strategy development for a couple of awesome companies whose names you’d probably recognize. My husband and I were classic DINKs (dual income, no kids) for years as we struggled with infertility. But eventually, with a little luck and a lot of science, our dream of starting a family became reality.
I always knew that I wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) so that I could be there for those tiny moments throughout the day that create a secure and supportive home environment. With a lot of careful budgeting, my husband Brian and I made that dream come true. We managed to cut our income in half, stay in our current home, and still afford to run the A/C in the summertime. A little bit, anyway. We will cover personal finance and budgeting in this blog. If we can do it, so can you.
I decided to start blogging because this whole experience of parenting is so incredibly fascinating, that I just love discussing it with friends and family. It seems like there’s always a new phase to deal with, or a new educational philosophy to consider. Always new challenges and new milestones to celebrate. I want to share those things with you, and most importantly, hear from you about your challenges and successes!
I’ll tell you right now that if you’re just starting out, one of the best things you can do is find a local mom’s group that fits your personality and lifestyle. I can’t tell you how much I value those friendships! Don’t wait until you think your child is “old enough” to enjoy a playdate. Most groups have baby brunches and other activities to help you meet other new moms.
My second major motivation for creating Love & Literacy is to encourage you to make the love of books a real focus in your family life. I am an Independent Consultant for Usborne Books & More, so I will be talking about their amazing products and how we use them in our home. But I will also be featuring other publishers’ books, used books, and more.
If you buy books from me, I earn a commission, and that’s great. If you buy books through my affiliate links on Amazon for instance, I earn a tiiiiny commission, and that’s great too. If you go to your local used book store and stock up, that’s FANTASTIC, and I hope you’ll share a picture or video of your haul on the Facebook Love & Literacy Community Page. Just buy books. You can never have too many.
If you are interested in learning more about Usborne Books & More, I suggest you join Britt&Bryn’s Usborne VIP Group on Facebook. The Love & Literacy Community Page will be more focused on parenting, education, the importance of play and literacy. UBAM promotions and events will take place on the VIP page. Make sense?
The final component of Love & Literacy is a charitable giving program that provides brand new, high-quality books to children in need, including foster children, pediatric cancer and hospital patients, and children experiencing homelessness due to economic insecurity or domestic violence. Part of the reason I signed up with Usborne Books & More is that they have an incredibly generous matching grant program. You can read more about this program on the Donate page.
